The Heart 2 Heart Community Fair, sponsored by The Durant Children's Center, a program of the Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Assault, brought people together in Sumter for a meaningful cause: raising awareness about preventing child abuse and promoting children’s safety. This event was more than just a gathering; it was a powerful reminder of how communities can unite to protect their youngest members and offer hope for a safer future. Members of The By Name Project (TBNP) joined the fair, experiencing firsthand the strength and resources this community offers.

A Day Filled with Support and Resources

The fair featured a wide range of local organizations and services dedicated to safety and support. The fire department, police department, sheriff’s office, and even a motorcycle club were present, showing the diverse ways the community works together. Attendees found plenty of resources to help families and children, from safety information to support networks.

The event also offered delicious food and fun activities for all ages. This mix of education and entertainment made the fair welcoming and engaging, encouraging families to learn while enjoying the day.

Activities That Brought Everyone Together

TBNP contributed to the event with an affirmation coloring page that was a hit among the kids. Children enjoyed coloring positive messages and received a small surprise afterward, making the experience memorable and uplifting.

One of the highlights was Kay’s origami workshop. Surprisingly, both adults and children eagerly participated, folding cranes, flowers, and little baskets. This simple craft became a bridge between generations, sparking creativity and conversation. It was a beautiful example of how shared activities can strengthen community bonds.

Building a Safer Community Together

Events like the Heart 2 Heart Community Fair remind us that child safety is a shared responsibility. By coming together, sharing resources, and supporting one another, communities can create safer environments for children to grow and thrive.

The presence of various public safety departments alongside community groups shows a strong network ready to respond and assist. This collaboration is essential for raising awareness and preventing child abuse.

Looking Forward to Next Year

The day ended with a sense of accomplishment and hope. The connections made, the knowledge shared, and the smiles on children’s faces all pointed to the success of the event. TBNP members left inspired by the community’s dedication and eager to participate again.
